    1) When i first read the story i felt devastated, then by the end the feel;ing had changed to inspired and i was moved by his story.
2)He wanted to show respect to his country and to those that were lost. He felt a close relationship with them and wanted to show others that there was still hope and reason to go on.
3)I believe he felt very devastated and surprised. It was unexpected and astonishing. I believe he began to play what he was feeling, and also for those people. He played for hope and respect.
4)You wantede us to show empathy for Smailovic. It also related to the chapter we just read.
    5) It relates because it makes you feel the emotions of Smailovic, which is empathy. Also he had empathy for all of the people that were lost in the attack. People who didn't know him even felt empathy for him. Someone took the time out to write and perform a song for him and that shows the most empathy of all.Which is what the whole chapter was about.

    1. After reading the article I felt sad because of the event that occurred there. I also felt shocked that someone would actually take the time out of their day and help people get through that devastating time.
    2. I think he did this to help other people get through their mourning periods.
    3. I believe that Smailovic felt scared and sad being that it happened outside of his window. He began to play his music to help him through the past event.
    4. I think that you did this to help try and express empathy.
    5. It relates to Chapter 7, because Smailovic felt empathetic for the people and the chapter was about expressing empathy.

  3. 1) I feel really proud for someone like him because even though the place that he lives in was really terrible, he wants to bring peace to his neighborhood so that anyone that were struggling could feel better.
    2) I believe that the reason he risked his life to play his music was that he didn’t know what else to do. So, he decided to play his music so he could feel calm in his neighborhood because he had struggle enough.
    3) After seeing the attack, I believe that he felt like he’s not in a safe place because in the story, it mentioned that his city was being called “Capital of Hell. However, he want to make all that feeling go away and as the result he decided to play the music.
    4) I think that the reason he want me to read this article is because to remind us that no matter what our situation is, we can bring peace and calmness even when we’re worrying about something bad would happen. We need to have empathy to understand what’s other feeling too.
    5) This article is related to chapter 7 because in the story of The Cellist of Sarajevo, he has empathy. He could understand and feel how his neighborhood struggling because their situation in that place was very bad. That’s why he wants to help them relaxing by playing his music because he has empathy.

    1. After reading the article, I felt kind of sad. Not sad, as in something bad had happened to me, but sad as in that I felt sorry for the people who the cellist was playing for.
    2. He risked his life to play his music because it was important to him. He played his music in order to give hope o the people of Sarajevo, and to promote peace. At the time, this was the most important thing in his life.
    3. I believe that he felt a great deal of grief after witnessing the attack. And to cope with this, he played his music. But also, he played his music because through music, he conveyed his emotions, to show others what he was feeling.
    4. You asked us to read it because it relates to Chapter 7. The story is about empathy, so, it makes sense.
    5. The article relates to Chapter 7 because it is all about empathy. Empathy is the reason Smailovic played his music. He was feeling for those who died and those who were grieving.

    1. After reading this article I am shocked. To me it seemed like music was his life. He played music all the time and it kind of seemed like he was doing it so that he can block all the pain from his country and neighborhoods out.
    2. I think he risked his life to play music because he loved it so much. He seemed like he was using music to block out all the things in his past that happened and soon he decided it was time to let it go and let someone else live the dream for him.
    3. I think he felt very upset. He moved from his original country so that he can get away from all the attacks and horrific events. I believe he started to play music, for the same reason as question one and two, so that he can block all the horrific events out of his life.
    4. You want us to read this article so that we can understand more of his past life and what happened when he started playing music.
    5. This article related to chapter 7 because they are talking about the usage of the L-Brain thinkers and the R-Brain thinkers one of these thinkers affected him and caused him to play music. They connect because you are using one side of your brain to play music.

  6. 1. I thought that it was amazing how they were able to change some ones looks and would change how they show their facial expressions. I felt that it was kind of strange that people with damage to their brain’s left hemisphere are especially good lie detectors. And people with damage to their right hemisphere have a harder time recognizing facial expressions.
    2. Because he played to show respect for the people that died in his country. He wanted to play one song for every person that died in different neighborhoods. He also did it because it gave people hope that one day there will be peace in the city once again.
    3. I think that he felt sorry for the people that lost some one. Since 22 people were slaughter right outside his window there were about 22 families that lost some one that day. And I think he also felt brave because to go out there and play a song for 22 days at 4 pm, he could have been killed himself.
    4. Because it shows how nobody could stop him from what he wanted to do. And to show that even though he was in threat of dying any day he still did what he wanted to do with his music.
    5. It relates because Vedran Smailovic showed empathy by expressing himself through his music and by showing every last dead person in his city how he felt.

    1. I felt kind of dumb after reading this article. I really don’t think females are smarter than us males.
    2. He felt passionate in what he was doing and felt he had to do was necessary.
    3. I think he felt upset after seeing the attack. He felt he had to play his music to prove a point.
    4. To give us a better understanding of what this book is about.
    5. It kind of summarizes the chapter and gives you a better understanding of the chapter.

    1. After reading the article I feel thankful and blessed. I’m happy that I didn’t have to go through anything like that but at the same time I am sad for those who did. It was sweet for Smailovic to do what he did too. It showed that he cared about what was going on.
    2. In my opinion he risked his life to play music because there wasn’t really anything more he could do. I mean his city was bombed and everyone, every other day was dying.
    3. I think he felt sad and scared at the same time. He feared dying. Sad because of the number of people who died each day and scared because his life too was at risk. I think he started to play his music to save himself the trouble of dying. Maybe even to send some type of message to the people who were still alive.
    4. I think you asked us to read the article to teach us to be grateful and appreciative of what we have. To teach us to have better attitudes towards each other. Stop always making a big deal out of something that is so small.
    5. The article relates to chapter 7 because of the title. The title of chapter 7 is empathy and in my words empathy means to be caring and to have a positive attitude towards people.

1.) I felt kind of happy because someone wanted to make a difference for his country and I felt bad for him because it took so long for someone to notice what he was doing.
2.) I think he risked his life to play his music because first off it was all he knew and if he played it would give him some kind of reassurance and also it showed the people that he still cared and loved his country.
3.) I believe that he felt hopeless because his whole country and life was being destroyed before his eyes. It must have been traumatic. He played his music to give himself hope that tomorrow was another day and he was still alive.
4.) I think you made us read this article to show how empathic one man is. I mean this pretty much tells you all what Chapter 7 was about.
5.) This article relates to Chapter 7 because the Pink guy was saying how everyone can be empathic and it took that one guy to change every one. Also it shows you that everyone has a little empathy in their hearts.

    1. After Reading this I feel kind of better. I feel glad that we have empathy but I feel sad for the people that don’t use empathy because like what happen in the story, people can die.
    2. I think that he risked his life because he wanted to honor the people who died and to respect them by playing his music. He wanted to let the people be remembered by it.
    3. I think he felt very sad and disappointed. He played music because it was the only thing that he knew. He wanted to either go down playing the thing he loved or survive doing the thing that he loves.
    4. You (Mr.Oneal) asked us to read this so we can experience empathy for the person in the story. You did that so we can understand what Mr. Pink is talking about.
    5. It relates to chapter 7 because we have empathy for the person and we care for them like in the chapter.

    1. After reading this article I think of myself as empathetic. I always picture myself living some other person’s life. I want to know how they are feeling about a situation. Or maybe I may want to know how hard things are for them compared to me, if there is really a comparison.
    2. I think he risked his life playing music there because that is the only thing he knew to do. Also because from the way they talk about him he must love music.
    3. I think all the death hit him very hard. I think he began playing music as a tribute to each person that died in the bombing.
    4. He did it to see if I can put myself in his shoes. And also to see why he stayed and played the music.
    5. This article relates to chapter 7 because both the article and the chapter teach you about empathy as well as how to think about how someone else fells about a situation.

    2. I think he risked his life to play his music because he wanted to give hope to others and it was his passion. He also wanted to show others that things would be okay.
    3. I think after seeing the attack he felt as though he had to do something to get people’s spirits up. I believe that he played his music because he needed to something to symbolize that here is still hope for things to get better and not worse.
    4. I think that Mr. O’Neal asked me to read the cellist of Sarajevo because he wanted me to compare it to past things that I have read in order to get a better understanding of what it is that I am reading.
    5. The article relates to chapter 7 because in chapter 7 it talks about empathy being able to put yourself in somebody else’s shoe’s and in the article he put himself in other people’s shoes so he started to play music to give hope to those who have lost someone.

    1. I feel a since of sorrow. My heart goes out to those who lost family in this incident. I also feel happy almost because of the man that came up through all the death and murder and played in honor of those who lost their lives.
    2. Because the people that died where more than likely people he knew. I think that he felt as if those people deserved to live just like anyone else. So this is the reason why he risked his life to go out and play a day for each life lost.
    3. I ask myself, how I would feel if I walked outside my house and saw the same heart rendering site of all those bodies. I believe that he began to play his music because so that the people that witnessed the attacks would feel comforted or that there was peace in site. This is how they felt at the end of the article, so it worked.
    4. So that we can understand how people in different countries respond to tragedies. And how we shouldn’t be selfish and think of our wellbeing all the time.
    5. About empathy and how some people need to better themselves in the light of empathy.

    1. After reading the article how did you feel?
    2. Why do you think Vedran Smailovic risked his life to play his music?
    3. How do you believe Smailovic felt after seeing the attack? Why do you believe he began playing his music?
    4. Why did I (Mr. ONeal) ask you to read The Cellist of Sarajevo?
    5. How does the article relate to Chapter 7?

    1. When I read this I was tried at first from reading the first part. Once I kept reading I became tried. Another thing I was surpised on how empathy is a big part of live I would have never knew that. Also I thought it was werid hoe the guy talk about the faces expression and how you can tell when someone is faking a smile or you can tell when some one is lying.

    2. I think that he risked his life to show that he cared. I also think that he wanted to show the respect to the people that died in the city.

    3. I think he felt angry, depress, and sad due to watching the people in the town die. I think he started to play the music to express his feeling about the bombing I also think that he did it to give people hope and give them something tha would help them be happy and let them know everything was going to be ok.

    4. I think you made us read this because it is a good example of empathy. Also for people that have empathy you could feel how smailovic felt.

    5. This relates because in the aritcle it talks about how empathy shows your feeling and how if you read the person or put your self in their shoes ypu can understand why people do what they do.

1.After reading “Empathy” makes me realize that everyone feelings are important, and we as people need to place ourselves in others shoes. I always imagine myself in somebody else shoes especially when I throw a tantrum about something I don’t get. Many countries can’t provide food for their children nor their villages. I am very fortunate and life is more than just being single-minded.

2.I think Vedran Smailovic risked his life and played his music because he felt for the 22 souls that were lost and that was a way he could escape “hell”. He sat and watched it all happen and playing his music for the county was his way of paying tribute and to soothe the town from the horrific incident.

3.After seeing the attack I think that Smailovic sad because he had to witness something like that. It is not fair for someone to kill or bomb a town knowing that it could and will scare people for the rest of their life. I’m sure his heart and sympathy went out to all the people who died and that is why he played his music for 22 days.

4.I think Mr. O’Neal made us read The Cellist of Sarajevo so that we can make a connection and put ourselves in Vedran shoes. He had to be feeling lonely after all the chaos was over. I know that I would feel the same way he did when seeing that. Realizing faults and coping with them is something we all have to deal with. It was the bombers fault the 22 people died, and now the county has to cope with the aftermath.

5.This article relates to chapter 7 because they both talk about empathy, and placing yourselves in someone else’s shoes.

    1. After reading the article how did you feel?
After reading this article I was amazed. I realized that as I read the first part of the article about him not sleeping I actually yawned myself. Then when I saw that he asked the question if I just yawned in the last minute I was blown away. I am an empathizer. I also think that this is one of the best chapters in his book. I say this because I am very interested in this topic. I also was amazed at the part of the chapter when they were talking about how people with damages to their brains are better at predicting if a person is lying then others.
    2. Why do you think Vedran Smailovic risked his life to play his music?
I believe that he continued to play his music because he felt like despite what is going on around him, he was obligated to show respect. I also think that he continued to play in order to get his mind off of all the bad things going around him. He did something that he loved to keep it mind off of all the bad things.

    3. How do you believe Smailovic felt after seeing the attack? Why do you believe he began playing his music?
I think that he felt very hurt and ashamed of what had become of his neighborhood. I think that he was sad but in order to cheer up he did his part to show respect for everyone who had lost their lives.

    4. Why did I (Mr. ONeal) ask you to read The Cellist of Sarajevo?
I think Mr. O’Neal wanted us to read this because it was a perfect example of a man empathizing for not only the people who were victims but also his country.

    5. How does the article relate to Chapter 7?
This article relates to Chapter 7 because it shows how man empathized with his country after a devastating event and our topic for today’s reading was empathy. Story simply provides us with real life example of empathy.

1.After reading the article how did you feel? – Empathy is kind of weird in my mind. After reading about when he was saying he was tired and was yawning I yawned about 5 seconds later I feel that maybe this stuff really is contagious. Its funny how just reading a simple article can be contagious, and make you do something that you read.
2.Why do you think Vedran Smailovic risked his life to play his music? – I think he chose to risk his life and play music because what he had seen occur was heartbreaking and the music that he played was for everyone that he seen loose their life so its like he dedicated his music to those lost ones.
3.How do you believe Smailovic felt after seeing the attack? Why do you believe he began playing his music? – I think he was terrified because of what he seen. To see anyone loose their life can effect anyone and scare you or just make you think what if that was me. I believe he started playing music because what he seen was depressing and he wanted to play music 4 those who lost their lives.
4.Why did I (Mr. ONeal) ask you to read The Cellist of Sarajevo? I think you made us read this because it can really make you think a lot and really appreciate life. I know I do because if I seen someone loose their life its going to make me want to live ma life to the fullest.
5.How does the article relate to Chapter 7? – They relate because in both there is things that can just affect a human and really make them wonder why.

    1. After reading the article, I feel like I learned a whole lot about empathy. I feel I know the concept of yawning and the reality of seeing what someone else does. To be able to feel what that other person does. I feel different about my thoughts I had before I read the article.
    2. It was the thing he loved to do most and it was made him happy. He was very good at it and would do anything to live his dream. It made him stronger to fight for what he wanted.
    3. He was scared and everything, but was angry. That attack was wrong and he didn’t like it at all. He didn’t want it to happen to himself.
    4. You wanted to get to know what this guy went through and the different perspectives on the way people think.

1.After reading the article I thought that the idea of playing hopeful music during trama was a good idea.

2.I think he risked his life and played music so he could help everybody stay positive about the situation.

3.After seeing this attack I believe he was very upset and angry. He played his music to not only give hope to his fellow people but to himself.

4.I think we read this to get a lifetime example to help us understand this chapter.

5.This article relates to Chapter 7 because empathy is imagining yourself in in somebody else’s position in a situationee what a person is feeling. Vedran Smailovic put himself in the position of the people in his city and felt what they was feeling so he wanted to make them feel better as he would want someone to make him feel better.

    1. After reading the article how did you feel?
I feel like I am a very empathetic person. The way the article mentioned using facial expressions to determine the way another person is feeling and other characteristics such as tone of voice. The funny part was when Pink began talking about how people aren’t as good of lie detectors as they seem to think. We focus too much on a person’s tone of voice or facial expression, when we need to look at facial cues and understand language. Now I will never be sure if someone is telling the truth or not, because I don’t think I have those skills. But because I am a womanI will always be able to empathize with others better than most of the male species.
    2. Why do you think Vedran Smailovic risked his life to play his music?

He felt he was making a difference, and giving people in his community hope. Someone had to stand up for what they believed in. He just happened to be that someone. Smailovic

    3. How do you believe Smailovic felt after seeing the attack? Why do you believe he began playing his music?
He was probably in shock. For one his people were dead, but then for it to happen right outside of his window. As long as he lives in that house he will picture that terror everytime he looks out of the window. 22 dead bodies will be embedded in his photographic memory for a life time. Music being his passion was his way to not only escape the pain, but let other people know what he was feeling. Through his music they empathized and felt his pain, bringning everyone together in a time of great disaster.
    4. Why did I (Mr. ONeal) ask you to read The Cellist of Sarajevo?
The story is very touching and it makes others get in touch with their emotional side and relate to Smailovic.
    5. How does the article relate to Chapter 7?
The title of chapter 7 was “Empathy”. Empathy is being able to in synch with your emotional side and put yourself in another persons shoes so that you feel what they are feeling. With The Cellist of Sarajevo I along with many others, felt the pain of Smailovic. He was so distraught that all he could do was convey his emotions through music for all of the souls lost and bring public attention to the wrong done.

1)After reading the article how did you feel?

I feel that hope can be brought into any situation good or bad. Just to think that one man brought hope to many through playing his cello in midst of destruction, is amazing. He made a great difference. He being positive in midst of a heap of negativity shows a lot about his character. When Yo-Yo Ma played his piece, he told the story of those who suffered through Sarajevo bombings. People can use Smailovic story as great inspiration.

2)Why do you think Vedran Smailovic risked his life to play his music?

I think Smailovic risked his life to play his music because it brought hope to his people. He was sick of living in fear and poverty. He wanted to do something positive. His music was the hope. He wanted people to enjoy their selves for a little of the day while after they got to go back to their lives of fear.

3)How do you believe Smailovic felt after seeing the attack? Why do you believe he began playing his music?

Evidently he felt there was no hope, living that way. He felt like he needed to make a difference. I believe he want to bring some kind of joy to his people at their hard time.

4)Why did I (Mr. ONeal) ask you to read The Cellist of Sarajevo?

I think Mr. ONeal asked me to read this to get a better understanding of empathy. So, we could maybe stand in Smailovic’s shoes and understand what was going on at that time and how he made a difference.

5)How does the article relate to Chapter 7?

In chapter 7, we learn about empathy, which is like standing in others shoes. Seeing what they see and feeling what they are feeling. Making us read the article, made us try to grasp what was occurring and what this person was really going through. It makes us connect with the person better.

1.I was pretty much surprised, because I didn’t know that empathy had such an impact on our lives.

2.He wanted his country to know that there was still some good left in the world so he played his cello which symbolized peace and harmony.

3.He was probably scarred at the fact that people were dying before his eyes and wanted to do something about it but he didn’t know what.

4.I think Mr. Oneal had us read that passage because it somehow related to chapter 7.

5.In chapter 7 it talks about empathy and empathy is the ability to imagine yourself in another person’s situation and you feel their pain, sorrow, or whatever it is they are feeling at that time. In this article the cellist of Sarajevo could feel the pain of his country and I think that’s how the article relates to chapter 7.

I think Vedran smailovic risked his life because he loved to play his music and he felt that he was respecting the people that was getting killed.
I think smailovic felt sad and angry after seeing the attack and I believe he began playing his music because he felt like he owed the people something because of everybody that was getting killed.
I think Mr. O’Neal made us read this because that’s what the question is about.

1.) I believe that after reading the story, the exact word to define my reaction would be “wow”. I believe that it was a very brave thing to do. I also think he should be admired for it because he actually wanted to find some kind of peace by any means.

2.) I believe he risked his life simple out of the goodness of his heart. He wanted to be able to bring peace to his people because of all they were going through and all that was going on. He really was dedicated to helping out in any way that he felt as though he could.

3.) I believe he was feeling like how everyone else would be. He was probably feeling like there was neither peace nor tranquility what so ever. This is why he decided to play his music because it was very calming and peaceful.

4 & 5.) I think you asked us to read this because you wanted us to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes. This way, we can get a better understanding of the chapter. This is also how it relates to chapter 7 because it was about empathy. The definition for that would be to put you in someone else’s shoes. In other words, the story and the chapter go hand in hand.

    1. The article kind of made me fill sad than it lifted me up when he risked his life for the other people.
    2. He saw that the place he loves and maybe only knew become endangered he did not want it to vanish. Also he wanted to bring peace to the situation, so he did what calms him. A nice tone that makes him think of good things when things were wrong kind of like music was his god and he wanted everyone to its grace.
    3. I think what he felt was pain that all he had was on its way of burning up right in front of his face.
    • He probably just felt the only way to help was to do what he knew best and that’s play awesome music.

  27. 1) I felt pretty bad after reading that article becuase it described people getting killed at probably the lowest point in their life, waiting in a bread line for food. There they are just trying to make it in the world and are killed for no apparent reason. The cellist made me feel a little better, but not a whole lot because 22 people were still killed.
2)I think he played in the crater because he believed that that was the only way to truly respect the legacy of the people who had been killed right in front of him. Sure he could've just said that it was a shame that they got killed and he'll miss them, but he knew that he had to do something more because they deserved more respect than that.
