As we complete the first chapter of the book I want you to think about the four key differences between the L-Directed and R-Directed thinking. (Located at the end of chapter 1)
Lets analyze our thinking again.
- Look at the following image - is it spinning clockwise or counter clockwise?
Again think about whether you are more of a L-Directed and R-Directed thinker/learner.
Please answer the following discussion question in 200 words or more using a "level 3" writing format.
- Why do you think it is important that we learn about how the brain functions?
- How do you believe that this will improve your learning as a student?
- Using examples from the chapter describe the trends that jobs are beginning to follow.

1) I believe it is important for us to know how our brain functions for numerous reasons. In order to understand how our body works, why we do the things and what controls the functions we do. Also to better understand why we have two sides.
2) This will improve my learning as a student in many ways. It will help me to understand what makes my body function the way it does. It will also help me to understand what kind of learner I am, my skills, and my traits.
3) Jobs today are now looking for more people who use the right side of their brain more. More creative people are finding jobs easier than those who tend to use the left side of their brain. Jobs that involve accounting, lawyers, etc are being sent over seas.

1.The image is spinning clockwise.
2.left brain: 10, right brain: 9
1.I think that it is important to learn how the brain functions, just so you will have a little extra knowledge to use in a situation, if on comes up. You can also say that this is important to learn because it will teach you how the brain works and this will better help you understand how you think. I also think that if you understand how the brain functions will help you be able to work both sides, which will help you become more balanced out.
2.I believe that this will help me as a
student when I go to college because I will probably be learning about the brain when I go into my major. I think that this will also help me as a student to exercise both sides of my brain to try and get them equal.
3.The trends that jobs are beginning to follow are that you have to be more creative, which also means you have to be right-brain dominated. The demand for the more creative jobs will only become stronger as the years progress. This means that the left-brain dominated jobs will become less, which means that there will be more people going overseas for them jobs.
1) The dancer is moving counter clockwise
ReplyDelete2) Left brain-10 Right brain-9
1) It is important to know how your functions because it can show us a lot of the parts that we do not use. We also need to learn about it because it can help us in the future depending on what kind of career someone wants to have. For example: a forensic scientist or a biologist
2) It will improve our learning because it will help us use different parts of our brains instead of using the same part all the time. It can help us become more successful as a student because we will be able to think outside the box and to help us solve things easier.
3) They are having more right brained people because they want more people with creativity. Like actors, directors, poet, artists ect. For the people that are left brained they are being sent over seas because the jobs that they are capable for are easy jobs. Like being an accountant or an engineer. They want more right brained people because globalization that is sending shipping white-collar work overseas, and powerful technologies that are eliminating certain kinds of work altogether.

ReplyDelete1. The picture is not spinning either way. It is made so tat the brain will perceive it as spinning, when it isn't. By looking at it the right way, you can make the dancer change direction, proving that it is not spining in any given direction.
2. It is important to learn about brain functions because if we can understand how the brain works, we can maximize its potential. For example, we know that logic and analysis are controlled by the left brain, so, in learning this, we also learned that to exercise the left brain, we need to do activities that involve logical thinking.
This will help me in learning by showing me how I will need to think to correctly learn a concept. For example, I know I have to think logically and analyze (use my left brain) in Math and Science, but for English, I need o think more about the emotions behind writing, and the underlying, non-literal things (use my right brain).
The chapter says that left-brained jobs, like computer programming, and accounting are being outsourced to other countries. So, with the deduction in left-brained jobs, that leaves only the non-outsourceable, right-brained jobs. This means that major jobs in the US are tending to be more towards the right-brained side of the scale. This is probably a good thing; otherwise there will be less creativity and “artsy” things, like music. I personally believe that invention, art, and music are all necessary for people to handle the stress that comes with a mostly left-brained life. Most of the activities that you hear about claiming to relieve stress are right-brained activities.

ReplyDelete1. I think it is very important to learn about the brain functions because the brain controls everything you do. Learning the brain functions make you more aware of what is happening in life and why these things are happening. Now instead of wondering why you did something or how something happen you can know a little more about it. Since I have learned about this I have now learned what kind of brain I use to think.
2. I believe that this will improve my learning as a student by allowing me to understand which part of my brain I am using and at what I am using it for. This will make you feel more comfortable about your learning and studying habits. It gives you a better idea on what your future will be like. You will now be able to help you brain take in new information that you are learning so that you can understand it a little better.
3. Job trends are starting to become more dependent of both left and right-brain thinking. The trends are following creators and empathizers, pattern recognizers, and meaning makers. These people such as, artist, inventors, designers, storytellers, caregivers, consolers, and big picture thinkers, will now share its greatest joys.
The girl is going in both directions because the direction is changing after certain moment.
ReplyDelete1. I think that it’s important for us to know how the brain functions. The reason I think it’s important for us to know because brain is like a system that controls us in our body. So, the brain is really important for our body because with brain, we are able to get a new idea or to do something new, basically it makes us creative when we do stuff. So, that’s the reason why I think that the brain is important to us because it basically helps us to be what we wanted to be and to achieve our dream but, of course we have to exercise our brain so we could become creative.
2. This would improve my learning as student because I would’ve known how the brain works or function and it would also improve my knowledge. By knowing this, it also makes me more understand of how brain functions and I can relate it with my own life.
3. The types of person that were creative is the type that people are looking to follow because they think that the creative people could get job and enjoy what they are doing.
The example would be architect, designer, inventors, etc. That’s the reason why this kind of jobs is the type of jobs that people like to do.

1. It is very important to know how the brain functions because we need to know what goes on inside our heads. Having a way to know what happens inside your brain is very important because we know that our brain is always going to do something else
ReplyDelete2. Because now I will really have to think about something inside the classroom and outside the classroom. Having to really think about what’s going is very important and using your brain more will help you get through a tough situation. A way for a kid to have a better learning is that they will think differently and more than just trying to find one answer.
3. The types trends that they are looking for now is people who could look at a situation a very different way. Inventors, designers, storytellers are now going into a different direction. Having someone to think outside of the box is going to change the way people think today. So people that are looking for right brainers to take charge of something will get more than what they want because now they are becoming the types of people who needs to think more differently and more creativity.

ReplyDeleteI think it is important to learn how the brain functions because everyone needs to know how someone else thinks. I mean it’s not just only one side of the brain thinking out there it’s everyone and I think it’s a good idea to explore the other options of thinking world. Thousands of people are trying to discover weather they are right or left brain and this now gives you helpful hints so you can decided on what brain path you can achieve.
I believe it will help my learning as a student because there are study tricks that are specifically made for right and left brainers. This helps me as a student because I can get better learning options. Also it can help me connect with my class mates. Some of my classmates are left brain while I am right brain so it is harder for groups to study together and communicate. Now with the left\right brain advantages you can get, it is easier for every one to learn and grow.
Jobs are following a more technological trend. Most of the people now are majoring in engineering, science, or a computer field. Even if you are a right brain thinker there are options for you to perform at a left brain job.

Question 2:
1. I think it is very important to learn about the brain functions because you can find out what will happen once you do something. You can also find out how the brain works. You can find out about what parts of the brain focuses on what parts of the body.
2. I think that it will improve my learning because I can see what I can work on as a person. I can get better at it and also I can find out what I am very good at. I also think that it will help me to try to do better as a person once I get it all figured out.
3. Maybe for some jobs, a person with a left brain could be a lot of jobs like a poet. They could be a poet because they are very creative to what it comes to as a left-brainer. I think that could possibly be a police officer also because in the story it talks about remembering faces and reacting to people with guns. This makes we think about the police officers and their everyday job as a person.
1. I think it is important to learn how the brain functions because we can now learn how different everyone thinks. I used to think that everyone thinks the exact same way as me, but that is not true at all. Not everyone is the same and this proves how people really do think differently. That is why I feel that it is important to learn about the different brain functions.
ReplyDelete2. This will improve my learning as a student because now I will try to use the both sides of my brain instead of just using the left side of my brain. I may be able to learn a little more than I usually do, I may understand things a little deeper than I do usually. That is how learning about the brain functions can help me as a student.
3. The trends that jobs are beginning to use are they put up pictures to show how people react to certain things, and the picture they choose shows what side of the brain they think with. Jobs are looking for people that can use both sides of their brain. For example, computer programmers that can crank codes, lawyers that can craft contracts, MBA’s that can crunch numbers, etc.

Discussion Questions.
1. I think it is important for you to know how your brain functions for many reasons. It gives you a sense on how your own brain functions and also gives you an idea on how your brain can function and how you can change the way you think. It also gives you an idea on how other people think. Also brain function shows people’s characteristics and why they do the things they do.
2. I think knowing brain function can change not only a students learning but anyone’s learning and understanding of certain things. If someone knew their brain function they would use that to their advantage to enhance their learning by the way that fits their brain the most. I know that I use both sides of my brain so I understand certain things better. So I will use this to my advantage to enhance my learning.
3. The trends that jobs are beginning to follow are different of those in the past. Jobs want people that are innovators and people who thing outside the box. In the past we needed people who were more quick thinkers and didn’t need a lot of time to do something. Now they want those who can use both sides of their brain and can think in many ways.
I think it's important we learn about the way in which the brain functions because we can determine what type of thinker we are and therefore figure out what we'd be successful at in life. If I realize that I am a left-brained thinker, then I wouldn't choose jobs that right-brained thinkers have an easier time doing, such as becoming a psychologist or an artist. Once I realize what I can excel at, I can stop looking at jobs in which I can’t display my full potential. I believe that learning the way the brain functions will greatly improve my learning as a student. If I know that things that will make it easier for me to learn I can inform my teacher of those things. Taking control of my education in this manner would most likely increase the amount of information I can retain. In the past the world has belonged to the left-brained thinkers. Ones, who program computers, create contracts and people, with Masters degrees in business, crunching numbers. Now, however, Daniel Pink believes that the future will belong to the right-brained thinkers and that their jobs will be more prominent. These jobs include artists, inventors, designers, storytellers, caregivers, consolers and big picture thinkers.

ReplyDelete1. I think it is important to learn how the brain functions because it could help you reach your goal in life. If you want to pursue a certain thing in life, but your struggling with understanding it. The world is moving from lawyers and computer programmers, to artist and inventors. It’s important for the people who felt like they weren’t needed at times or if they weren’t as important in use. If you’re a handy man or good creator than a math wiz or a great speaker.
2. It will help me understand what I’m good at doing and what I’m not good at doing. It will give me an idea that I have to work harder at everything and give my best effort. It gives me a reason why you would struggle in some classes, or why some are harder for me. I don’t like it because it doesn’t matter what you think, you can be whatever you want to be as long as you work hard enough.
3. It saying that the left-brained strengths are no longer more superior to the right-brained strengths due to the time period. The lawyer, technology type minds are not up to par in the 21st century. The creators, inventors, painters, and construction workers are needed more and are more useful now than ever. They are jobs a right-brained person would do and it’s surprising to because they would think that type of person would silly and retarded.

1. I my think that by studying the brain we learn how it works. Seeing how the brain operates shows us what it needs to work correctly. Therefore by watching and examining the brain we see what will later help us with injuries or disease that takes place in the brain, stopping complications and maybe even deaths later on in the future.
2. It will help us determine the best way to go about learning for right and or left brain students. Not only that, but seeing which way works better for us can also help us learn quicker and at a better quality. There fore helping take us through school with ease.
3. I believe that from the past up till now, that people have thought that artists, inventors, designers, storytellers alike have almost not been needed. Maybe because there was a higher demand for people with left brain qualities back in those times. But that is starting to change. People of today are starting to see that those people with right brain qualities will "reap society's richest rewards and share its greatest joys", as author Daniel Pink put it. That being said there is a higher demand for people with right brain qualities now days. I don’t understand why very much though.

It is important to learn how the brain functions because it could help you understand why you think the way you do. It could probably help you understand what has been going on all your life. it may be able to answer questions that you couldn’t.
I believe that this can help improve your learning as a student by getting you to see the big picture of things and not just look at one side of a story. This could make things easier when you see the whole thing and not just a piece of it you can fully understand it.
This can also improve you thought process.
Understanding the functions of the brain will help you to understand others and not just you self. Knowing about the brain can help to better you as a person.
According to the text jobs are starting to follow the artistry, empathy, and taking the long view. Most jobs want you to see more then what’s right in front of you. You have to be able go further into detail just by looking at once piece of information. These are the things that job will be looking for once we graduate from school so you will have to be able to do these things. A lot of the jobs that look for this are the same jobs that we will soon be applying for in the future.

ReplyDeleteI think that it is important for us to learn about the way that the brain functions because it’s good for us to understand how our brain works so that we know what is going on with our brain. It helps us to better understand the purpose of why we do the things we do. I think that having the knowledge of the functions of the brain will better me as a student because it will make me more aware of people’s actions and thoughts and make me not be so judgmental of what people act or think. I also think that being able to understand the function of the brain will help me as a student because it will help me understand why I do what I do and that will help me to be able to show how what I found was figured out. Jobs that are starting to follow trends include poets, actors, dancers, and artists.
I think it is important to learn how the brain functions will and can help us in our future. So when we get jobs we can get one that we are skilled in. If we understand how our brain works for us then we our guaranteed to thrive and prosper. We can get jobs that we have no other choice except to succeed in. If we learn how each side works then we will not be wasting time trying to complete tasks that may be impossible for some of us. Learning how my brain works can actually help as a student. It will improve my learning as a student because I would know my strengths and weakness’ as a right brained thinker. That way I would know for myself what I know I would need to work extra hard and get a little more help in to stay up. In Chapter 1 they say the past decades were the time for those more articulate, those who program computers, people who crack codes and those humans who could crack codes. Today it is very different. This is almost like the century of designers. This is the time for storytellers. Now it’s time for the artist. This is the age of inventors.

ReplyDelete1. Why do you think it is important that we learn about how the brain functions?
Learning how the brain functions can help us progress mentally in everyday situations such as school. Knowing if you are a right brainer or a left brainer can help a student recognize some of their weaknesses and strengths. It was said in the book that the right side of the brain specializes in context and the left side of the brain specializes in text. People can connect with these discoveries and become aware of why, they perceive text the way they do, or why they read and write the way they do. The big picture is understanding.
2. How do you believe that this will improve your learning as a student?
I am now making text to life connections such as they way that I learn things and see the world as a right brainer. Also what I may need to do in order to improve my left brained skills that aren’t where they should be.
3. Using examples from the chapter describe the trends that jobs are beginning to follow.
Employers today are looking for people who can bring views together from every perspective and create one big picture. People who can empathize, invent, design, recognize patterns and connect with their spiritual side are being considered for jobs as opposed to logical thinkers who can count and create computer programs. The conceptual age is beginning where artsy fartsy is in and suits and ties are out.
I think it is important to know how brains function because we need to know how to make the brain even smarter. Also, I think it’s important for health reasons. If someone was to have problems with their brain and needed help, someone needs to know how to fix it. I think this will improve my learning as a student in many ways. Maybe I will do better in school if I know that way my brain functions. I can work on the things that are not that great. For example, I am a right brain thinker. I could practice doing things that left brain thinkers do so that I can get even smarter then I am now.

ReplyDelete1.) I believe that it is important to learn how the brain works because it can offer a better understanding as to how and why we do certain things in our everyday life. Many people think differently than others due to this “right-brain, left-brain” theory. With us getting a better explanation, we can get to know what will work for us and what probable won’t (when it comes to learning).
2.) I think that this will personally improve my learning as a student because, as I said before, it gives a better understanding as to why I do certain things certain ways. I can use this information to help myself improve my learning by using tactics that my brain will more than likely be familiar with. In turn, this can save a lot of time and get me on the write track very quick and easily.
3.)The chapter describes that the trends that are being followed in jobs are those of the artistic type. More and more jobs want to hire people based on creativity than just intelligence. They want those “artsy-fartsy” people instead of your typical logical, inside of the box thinker. This way, it can benefit the companies a lot more and help to further and expand them.

Jada Hill Period 2 Jan. 30, 2009 It is important to know how the brain functions because it is a part of you. It’s important to learn about other body parts and how they function, so the brain should be treated the same. The brain is the center of control, so it really should be a focus point. Everything in our body happens because of the brain so to know about it would be beneficial to us. I believe this would help me as a student because if I know how my brain functions, I can practice different methods of thinking and studying and it would help me in school be more efficient. Although colleges are no longer looking just for great academics, it’s still very important to have them and they certainly do help with getting into college. In the end, the more I know the better I am at being successful, not with just my brain, but about everything. Jobs are basically becoming more Right-brained. The jobs such as being an accountant are not in as much demand. While the left-brained people are creating things, the right-brained people have to find ways to make them more attractive to the consumer, so they are becoming more in demand.

ReplyDelete1)Why do you think it is important that we learn about how the brain functions?
I think it’s important that we learn how the brain functions because it can help us understand our weaknesses and our strengths. If we understand the way our brain then we can help improve the things that we can do as well as others things, such as writing or mathematics. I also think it will help us understand how our bodies function. We can also find out why we think certain ways.
2)How do you believe that this will improve your learning as a student?
I believe that knowing how your brain functions can improve your learning as a student in many ways. It can help you in places where you are weak the most. Let’s say a student is weak in writing. If we know how our brain functions, then that student can maybe work on skills that can strengthen their writing. Basically, it can help you excel. It could also help you understand what skills you have and what ways you could use them.
3)Using examples from the chapter describe the trends that jobs are beginning to follow.
There is more of a demand of creative people for jobs these days. This means many right brain thinkers are getting jobs easier. They are people such as artist, inventors, and designers. Jobs want to make big money and they want people with big ideas, ideas that sell. Jobs want the ones who think outside the box. This will bring more money. These right brain thinkers will make a major difference for our future.

1) What the author means by “High Concept, High Touch” is that in order to survive in the business world, you have to be able to do the job better than an oversees worker. That means our country’s work has to be at a higher level, and overseas workers aren’t as capable as we are at the job. This age and day is going to need more than just technology to succeed in the world. Its going to take creativity and a strong mind to be able to stay equip with the changing of the world today. High concept and high touch are on the rise and surely having an impact on the world in general.
Yes, I do believe that I am a High Concept, High Touch individual. As far as the economy and the society are going I’m keeping up fairly well. I don’t depend on technology all the time I think of alternate ways, to make things possible. In the chapter it states “Mere survival today depends on being able to do something that overseas knowledge workers can’t do cheaper, that powerful computers can’t do faster, and that satisfies the abundant age.” I know that I am capable doing jobs I know for sure others can’t do or be to keep up with. In order to keep our jobs here we have to be able to put up challenges that we know we can achieve at doing.
2) Mr. Pink I think that I qualify for this job because not only am I the best at it I can also relate to what you think about the position. I can do what ever you ask me in a matter of time, and have it almost done to perfection. I am very equipping with all the technology and work field of the 21st century and I know for a fact I can handle it. I absolutely love people and avid when communicating with others. When it comes down to getting the job done, I don’t slack nor do I procrastinate I get the job done. I work hard and to the best of my ability. With no distraction I can reassure you that I will be a star employee. If you give me the opportunity to work for you and do this job; I can guarantee you would be satisfied and proud of me.
3) I think that the SAT shouldn’t be taken right before college. The SAT kind of shows what the person learned throughout the year, but it does not show how smart they are. A lot of people do extremely well on the SAT, while others struggle to get by. Some of the star students during high school choke on the SAT because its tension and worries of failing. College is important and makes the SAT a main priority, but I don’t think it should determine what you should be as far as college and all. The idea of the Rainbow Project thrills me. The idea of it is exciting, it sounds way more interesting that the SATs. It says in the chapter that the Rainbow Project has been twice as successful that the SAT. Students taking the test are able to show their creative abilities and the way they portray things. Students should be able to distinguish what is best for the. It should be their decision whether they want to take the test or not.
What’s that smell?
One day Ollie was walking down the street of his neighborhood in Westbrook, beat boxing to a tune that was playing on his iPod, when he sniffed a horrible, horrible smell. Ollie kind of ignored the smell because he thought it would go away. Maybe it was just the Fish Mart across the street, but as he continued to walk he still smelled the stinky aroma. He’s thinking to himself “What’s that smell”, he looked around to see if anybody else smelled what he was but it didn’t seem like it. The situation didn’t get any better because the sun was shining so the smell began to worsen. He covered his nose but the smell just flowed with him. Ollie sniffed him because things just didn’t seem right; he took a shower earlier so he just knew it wasn’t him. But, what he forgot was he had a dead frog in his pocket from LAST WEEK!!! He couldn’t take the smell any longer, so he deiced to go home. When he got to his house, Ollie frown his face up because that smell was following him. He took all his clothes off and took a long shower, but when he got out it was still there. Now he was angry because he was getting sick. He went to his room and begin to rummage through the clothes he was wearing, he felt something dry and rough in his pocket. When he pulled it out it was it was the dead frog from last week. He sniffed the little shriveled creature and noticed that awful smell. He finally smiled and said to him self “that was the smell.”

ReplyDeleteIt is important to know how our brain function because it is helpful to know what we do n our daily life and what controls what we are doing. I believe that it would also help us with understand if you are a left brain thinker, a right brain thinker, or both. I am a little more of a left brain thinker, so I could train my brain to think more like a right brain thinker by doing more artistic things and less of sequential things. I do think that if you are a right brain thinker then the chances of you getting a job is higher than a left brain thinker because of the artistic and the creative ideas that you have.
I believe that this would improve my learning as a student because I can train myself to become more of a right brain thinker which would be more helpful and is more necessary in my future. It’s because the job that contains more of a left brain thinker could be sent overseas and that means the chances of me getting a job is more difficult. It is a lot easier for a right brain thinker to get a job in today’s society. I could do more artistic things that I usually don’t do to improve my creative skill.
The right brain thinker are most likely going to have a job more than the left brain thinker because the right brain thinker are more creative and usually have new ideas which is more helpful in the marketing fields.

It is important to know how the brain functions because we as people have to be able to see situations in more than one way. We need to be able to understand others thought process and why people choose to think the way they do. Everyone thinks a certain way for a reason that they only know. That is why we should take time to study the way the brain functions so that we can understand others better without judging them. We need to understand how the body works and why it functions that way it does. It is also important because, if there would ever come a time where you were having an issue with your brain or someone else’s then it would be easier to immediately point out the problem and get it fixed. If we have more knowledge about the brain then we could challenge ourselves to do better or to see how far we can get with the knowledge we know about the brain.
Knowing how the brain functions could help me improve my learning as a student because it would help to me to understand why I do things academically. It could also, help me to see how far I can push and challenge myself in class. It can also help you determine whether I am a left or right brain thinker and it can also help me to train my brain to use both sides. I can maximize my potential and show that I am totally capable of being creative and sophisticated maybe even a brain surgeon.
The new trends that jobs are beginning to follow are the artist, inventors, designer, storytellers, etc. The jobs will be given to creators and empathizers, pattern recognizers, and also the meaning makers. The Right Brainers will get the good jobs because they are the creative ones and that is how their brains are trained to work.
